The trompe l’oeil. The optical illusion. The trick of the eye. Something we have all experienced at some point in our lives, and something that gives a joy and pleasure to people. So this week, in a collaboration with LSAD, we set out to create our own.

After being segregated into groups and teams, myself, Rebecca, Yasmin, Isabelle and Lorna, went to set up our own attempt at an optical illusion. We searched high and low to find a suitable place to create such a masterpiece. Seeing as it was such a beautiful day, and as we are always stuck inside the studio, we decided to go out and take full advantage of the sunshine and make our trompe l’oeil outdoors.

The fact that we only had 3 hours, and essentially no idea what to do, we tried to keep it simple and make what would look like floating cuboids on the flat surface. So with tape in hand, and a great team mentality, we set off to create the artwork.

However setbacks were had, as we not only ran out of thick black silage tape but also the thinner black electrical tape. This didn’t stop us though, as we worked through it. The final product might not be the greatest or most accurate depiction of an illusion, but it is something that really intrigued me, one that makes me want to look into the process again in the future.

The process of making the piece was one that required great team work, and even though it was a difficult task to manufacture, it was by far one of my favourite tasks we have done this semester.

The Dream Team
